Sunday Service: March 2026 Editions

March 1, 2026 -

I once drained a putt for eagle during a wedding weekend scramble.
The kind of putt you talk about for years.

I’ve watched a buddy hole out from 50 yards like it was nothing.
We’ve all heard the stories, the random pairing where someone “couldn’t miss,” the round with strangers where everything just clicked.

Golf stories are part of the DNA of the game. Almost as much as fishing stories.

And here’s the thing… we need them.

Because most rounds aren’t heroic. Most rounds are doubles, missed three footers, and that one drive you swear was “just a little off.”

But every once in a while, something magic happens. A swing feels effortless. A putt drops dead center. A shot comes off exactly how you pictured it.

And that one moment?
It buys you another month of belief.

That’s why we tell the stories. Not to brag.
To remind ourselves that we’ve felt it before.

And we’ll feel it again.

When I was a kid, I never understood golf.

On the weekends my dad would have it on the TV. The announcers spoke in quiet tones and it almost always ended with him falling asleep on the couch. To me, it looked like the most boring thing in the world.

Years later, when I finally picked up the game and got to play a few rounds with him, I understood.

Golf isn’t just about the shots. It’s about the time. The conversation between holes. The slow walk down the fairway. The stories that get told when there’s nowhere else to be.

Now when I catch a round with the the old man I cherish it. The game matters, but the time together matters more.

And now that I have kids of my own, I hope someday they understand the same thing.

It’s more than a game.
It’s bonding.
Time on the course is time well spent.

Sometimes after a shot I catch myself looking down at my club like it somehow betrayed me. Like the club is the reason the ball just leaked right or came up short. For a second it feels personal.

But if I’m honest, most of the time it’s not the club at all. It’s me. I’m not letting it do the job it was designed to do.

Instead of making a smooth swing, I start trying to control everything. Steering the face. Guiding the ball. Forcing the shot instead of trusting it. The harder you try to manufacture the perfect swing, the worse it usually gets.

Golf has a funny way of exposing that. The club already knows what it’s supposed to do. The loft is there. The weight is there. The design is there. All it really needs is a good swing and a little trust.

Sometimes the lesson isn’t about changing clubs, changing your swing, or overthinking the mechanics. Sometimes it’s just about getting out of your own way and letting the club do its job.

The first tee shot tells you a lot.

Not about your swing but about your mind.

You step up. No rhythm yet. No feel.
Just thoughts. Expectations. Pressure you probably created yourself.

You want to start good.
You feel like you need to start good.

And that is where it goes sideways.

Golf does not reward tension.
It rewards commitment.

And sometimes it rewards restraint.

Short par 4.
You could pull driver and try to make a statement.

Or you grab an iron.
Put it in play. Start the day clean.

Let the big dog wait for the par 5.

That choice right there is the round.

Not ego. Not hero shots.
Just knowing when to swing and when not to.

So maybe today is not about striping the first drive.
Maybe it is about making the right decision and committing to it.

Let it go.
Trust what you brought with you.

Because one swing does not define the round.
Your decisions do.

Practice, practice, practice.
Not every rep happens on the course.

Sometimes it’s in the garage.
On the carpet.
With a cup and a flag.

No gallery. No pressure.
Just you and the work.

Practice, practice, practice.
