My Jiu-Jitsu Journey: Finding an Anchor After Hockey

Three years ago, after retiring from professional hockey, I found myself searching for something that could replace the structure, challenge, and purpose that the game had given me for most of my life. That's when Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu entered my world.
I started because of my friend and coach, Bomba. He believed in me from day one and introduced me to a new way of growing, competing, and learning. Months after he tied my blue belt around my waist, he passed away. His loss hit hard, but his impact on my life continues every time I step onto the mats.

What started as a hobby quickly became much more. Jiu-jitsu has become an anchor in my everyday life. It challenges me physically, humbles me mentally, and gives me a sense of community that reminds me of the locker rooms I was fortunate to be part of throughout my hockey career. The lessons go far beyond techniques and submissions. It's about showing up when you're tired, staying calm under pressure, and understanding that growth comes from being uncomfortable. Those lessons have helped me navigate life after hockey in ways I never expected.

Three years in, I know this is a journey that never truly ends. There is always something to learn, another challenge to face, and another opportunity to grow. I'm grateful for every coach, every lesson, every teammate, and every moment on the mats.
Most importantly, I'm grateful to Bomba. His influence lives on in every roll, every class, and every step of this journey.
