BJJ Blog: The Dance

When two Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners square up to test one another, it always reminds me of a dance. BJJ may be known as a ground-fighting system, but every match begins on the feet. Before the submissions, sweeps, and positional battles can begin, both opponents must decide how the fight will reach the ground.

One person grabs a collar. The other searches for a sleeve, an underhook, or better head position. They circle, change direction, test each other’s balance, and react to every shift in weight. One pulls while the other pushes. Each movement invites a response, and each response reveals something.

Then someone decides it is time to take the dance to the ground. There are usually two ways to get there: pull guard or execute a takedown. Both are legitimate strategies, and both require timing and skill. Pulling guard lets a practitioner move directly into the position where they feel most comfortable. A takedown, however, demands that you disrupt your opponent’s posture, control their balance, and put them on the mat on your terms.

I have always preferred the takedown. There is something satisfying about earning the top position from the feet. A clean takedown creates momentum and allows you to begin the ground battle with control. But a successful takedown is rarely the result of strength alone. Like the rest of jiu-jitsu, it depends on sensitivity, balance, timing, and the ability to recognize the right moment.

That is what makes the opening exchange so interesting. The grips, circling, feints, and changes of level are not meaningless movements. They are a conversation between two opponents. Each is asking questions, searching for reactions, and waiting for an opening.

Like any dance, one person may appear to lead, but the other is always preparing the next step.
